What can a student expect in each session?

OUR TUTORING METHODS ARE STUDENT-CENTERED AND EVIDENCE-BASED

Explicit Instruction

Good learning is the result of effective instruction. Before each session we identify the learning goal, determine the instructional routines, and plan the tasks a student should be able to accomplish to demonstrate mastery.

Executive Function

Executive function is the capacity to plan ahead, meet goals, display self-control, handle interruptions, and stay focused despite distractions. We incorporate these strategies and offer explicit instruction in this critical area of academic and personal development.

Metacognitive Strategies

The human brain has an amazing ability to comprehend, maintain, and prioritize information. Metacognitive strategies such as activating background knowledge, making the thinking process visible, and self-evaluation during learning naturally lead to increased learning retention and accuracy.

Positive Relationship

Research shows that optimal learning occurs in the context of positive, trusting relationships combined with high expectations. Our goal for every client is to develop a personal relationship that leads to real partnership in learning.

Design for Learning

Learning is a complex process that engages multiple parts of the brain in the why, what, and how of learning. We intentionally design our lessons with multiple means of engagement, representation, and response to leverage the power of each of these parts of the brain in the learning process.

Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that we grow through dedicated effort. We value mistakes as learning opportunities, believe practice is key to mastery, and are inspired by the success of others. Heartland embraces growth mindset as part of our teaching and learning philosophy.
